NeRD (Navy e-Reader Device) is now available for sailors to use while being deploy at sea. For quite long years, U.S Navy vessels are not always allowed to use devices such as smartphones or tablets due to cyber-security purposes. Most submarines and ships don’t have the capacity to keep books on bookshelves. Therefore, bookworm sailors will have no other choice, but to spend time watching the vastness of the sea.
Navy e-book reader is customized to ensure security because it uses no Wi-Fi, internet connection, and cellular connectivity. Therefore, it leaves no signal for enemy hackers to track. The device also provides a space for your own selection of eBooks and it is preloaded with 300 books once it reaches a sailor’s hand. It is like accessing to a bigger digital library.
Two years ago, Navy sought help for Findway World to create an e-reader for sailors. Findway Company had produced similar devices for US Army soldiers and other military troops for a certain period of time and Navy already gave its trust to the company.
Program assistant for the Navy General Library Program, Carrato told CNN that the Navy would be giving five devices to each of the submarines during their fleet. Soon, it will be thoroughly distributed to all Navy Vessels.
"I've gotten some e-mails from sailors on surface vessels who are very eager to know when they'll get them," Carrato said.
NeRD will contain fiction, nonfiction, best-seller books, classics and historical books chosen by the Navy. Some of the best novels and book series are also included like “Game of Thrones,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Ender’s Game,” "The Lord of the Rings," Stephen King's "The Stand," and "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks."
For sure, both literary and non-literary-minded sailors will enjoy this new device. Say goodbye to boredom because they can now ready any books they want during their leisure time on board.
