On Wednesday, Google Glass estimated cost was release which shows that the glass’ current price tag $1, 500 may cost the Internet giant a lot less. According to TechInsight’s Teardown.com business, which participates and helps in analyzing new consumer gadgets, they examined that the components packed tightly inside of Glass only put a cost estimation of $79.78.
However, Google spokesperson commented that Teardown.com’s estimation of cost is “absolutely wrong.” He refused to give further comments after this statement.
The possible reason for the dispute may have to do with the Glass physical limitations with a pair of eyeglasses. For example, the glass screen is just a few millimeters wide. However, despite its size it can provide a quite high resolution that is difficult to assemble and expensive to design. However, based on Teardown.com’s estimation of display, touchscreen and glass only cost $3.
Teardown.com clarified that what they did is just a fast estimation from a quick analysis. Therefore, it may change after a deeper exploration of the product.
Thomas Gallant, spokesman at the research firm said in an email that, “Now that the Glass is part way through the full Deep Dive Teardown analysis we will have a better understanding of what each component costs.”
Squeezing also all the components into a small wearable device probably cost more to Google. It is also assembled in California, which is much expensive compared to the production done in Asia. They also have to take note that there are many uncounted design cost- including the work force provided by the PhDs and engineers, employees and staff who are paid by Google.
The estimation will still raise questions regarding the expensive price of Google Glass. The company has a plan to reduce its cost by the time it will be release to public.
