Instagram‘s new features are rolled out on Tuesday. Users are now allowed to edit their photos, in addition to its static filter.

Before you can use Instagram’s new tool you need to update it to version 6.0, which hit the iOS App Store and Google Play today.

After updating the app, you can now select a photo you want to edit and then tap any filter. You just need to search for the wrench icon to bring up editing tools.

Once you find the setting, you can start adjusting the photo’s brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, highlights and shadows. A vignette effect can also be added to your pictures and it can now sharpen photo quality.

For the first time, the filter you apply to your photo is now adjustable. All you need to do is double-tap the filter icon and you will have a slider where you can adjust the potency to your preference.

All of these things on Instagram is no longer new because there have long been many apps that let you do photo editing the same thing you do on Instagram. Some of these apps are VSCO Cam, Mextures, Camera+, Litely, Photoshop Touch and hundreds of others.

Those apps have already reached the peak of its popularity, so Instagram is still trying to keep the competition and being defensive at the same time. They rolled out the new feature to catch up to the competition, not to mention providing a way for people who like to edit their photos to do so without leaving the Instagram app.

But if you really like Instagram’s simplicity, don’t worry because the update doesn’t create any changes on the classic flow of the original app.
